Jones' nickname, "Chickenhawk", comes from an old, but well-known cartoon -- "I'm a Chickenhawk, and you're a chicken!"
Chuck Jones grew up in Long Beach, CA, just south of LA. His parents were bikers, and as soon as he turned sixteen, his dad helped him rebuild an old panhead. It didn't look like much at first, but boy could that hog fly. When he cruised down PCH, that's just what he felt like, like he was flying, which led him to his true calling.
Chuck took a student loan and went to technical school, to learn to fly helicopters. He seemed to have a natural talent for it, and really enjoyed it. He took a couple of private lessons flying Cessnas, but choppers were what he liked.
In 1995, Chuck took a job in Philadelphia as a MEDEVAC pilot for the University of Pennsylvania, it was exciting work and he got to be a hot dog. While in PA, chuck joined the Army Reserves, it was a win-win situation. Not only did he get to fly real military birds, they commissioned him as a 2nd looie, and they also had a great deal for paying back his student loan. Besides, it was only one weekend a month. Little did he know...
He deployed with the 28th in 1999 and served with them for the entire deployment as a chopper pilot. He returned to PA with the unit in 2001 and remained loyal during the DEC 2002 mutiny. There aren't any more choppers to be flown, but he continues to fill in in any capacity he can.
